817 Squadron returns home to visit Goolwa | The Times

More than 30 former 817 Squadron RAN service personnel from across the country will “return home” to Goolwa this weekend as part of a 10 year reunion and Anzac Day commemorations.

Beginning in 1986, 817 Squadron formed a special connection to the local community, regularly visiting for events including Anzac Day and the SA Wooden Boat Festival.

A longstanding relationship was established with the Sea King helicopter squadron and the then District Council of Port Elliot and Goolwa (Alexandrina Council), which continued until 2011 when the Squadron was officially decommissioned.

Local families hosted navy personnel in their homes during visits by the Squadron, with the servicemen and women being adopted as members of…
